Mandalas
Lesson Overview:
• Students will create radial symmetry in mandala designs. Materials: Pencil, 8 x 8" square piece of paper, ruler, colored pencils, crayons, markers. Mandalas can also be created outside with Chalk! 1) Start with a square and find the center by drawing diagonals from each of the corners through the center 2) You are dividing the paper into fourths using a rulers edge to make straight diagonal lines. 3) Divide the paper again into eighths by drawing a horizontal line and a vertical line through the center point with the ruler. 4) Trace a circle evenly around the center point (Use a found object to trace the circle such as a lid from a plastic container. If you have a compass the circle will be more exact. 5) Pick one shape to repeat all the way around in a radial pattern. 6) Try a letter V all the way around to make a star pattern. 7) Start with an easy shape such as a circle or triangle. (Radial design is from the center out like the Sun or a Flower) 8) Add more geometric shapes in each section. 9) Color your design with markers, try A B patterns 10) Sign your name on the bottom left corner |
